Illnesses and Injuries
Students should be free of fever or vomit for 24 hours before returning to school, regardless of how they feel. DO NOT send your student to school for the nurse to determine if they are well enough to attend. In accordance with state law, the school nurse is not allowed to make a medical diagnosis or prescribe treatment. If you have any doubt, keep your student at home and check with your family provider.
If your student becomes ill enough to be removed from school, sustains more than a minor injury, or has an emergency, parents/guardians will be notified. It is the parent/guardian's responsibility to make arrangements to pick up an ill or injured student as promptly as possible.
DO NOT SEND YOUR STUDENT TO SCHOOL if they have the following:
- Diarrhea
- Vomiting
- Frequent, persistent, harsh cough that is not relieved with treatment
- Undiagnosed rash
- Temperature of 100℉ or higher
- Serious physical injuries that requires continuous supervision
- Symptoms of viral contagions (pink eye, strep throat, etc.)
- Significant changes in student’s usual behavior
Student(s) may return to school IF they have been FEVER free and VOMIT free for 24 hours without any medicinal intervention regardless if they feel better.
When students become ill or injured at school, they are sent to the Nurse’s Office. Based on assessment, if it is necessary for students to leave school, the parent/guardian will be contacted. The nurse may suggest further medical follow-up in certain circumstances. Further care is the responsibility of the parent/guardian. If a student requires pick up, the student is kept in the Nurse’s Office until the parent/guardian arrives or where adult supervision can be provided. Students need to be picked up as promptly as possible. Parents/guardians are encouraged to keep contact information up to date with school offices. Notify the school office immediately of any changes in contact information.
Please note, NO student may walk home ill.
