Attendance

Why Attendance is Important

Consistent attendance is critical for academic success and future opportunities. Whether absences are excused or unexcused, missing too much school can disrupt learning and put students at risk of falling behind. Research shows that academic performance declines as absences increase, making it essential for students to be present and engaged every day.

If your child is unable to attend school, be sure to contact your student’s school to report the absence.

Middle & High School Attendance

While both terms relate to school attendance, they are not the same:

  • Truancy refers to unexcused absences without valid reasons and can have legal implications for families.
  • Chronic Absenteeism includes all absences, excused and unexcused, that total 10% or more of the school year (approximately 18 days for most schools). Chronic absenteeism is often a warning sign that a student is at risk academically.

The Impact of Missing School

When students miss too many days of school, they lose valuable learning time and opportunities to build essential skills. Over time, this can lead to:

  • Falling behind in core subjects like math and reading.
  • Lower grades and test scores, which may affect future opportunities such as college admissions or career readiness.
  • Reduced engagement, making it harder to catch up and stay motivated.

Building a Foundation for Success

Humboldt Unified School District is committed to helping all students reach their full potential. Regular attendance allows students to benefit from well-rounded education, develop positive relationships with peers and teachers, and build the foundation for lifelong success.

Let's work together to make daily attendance a priority and ensure that every student has the tools they need to thrive!

Attendance Monitoring Process

We are dedicated to partnering with families to promote regular attendance and address any challenges. Our attendance monitoring process includes:

  • 5 Days/Periods Absent: A letter will be sent home, and an email will be sent via ParentVue to emphasize the importance of attendance.f
  • 10 Days/Periods Absent: A follow-up letter and email will be sent, along with a phone call and/or a conference to discuss the situation.
  • 15 Days/Periods Absent: A letter and email will be sent, and a conference will be scheduled to address the ongoing issue and reinforce the importance of regular attendance.
  • 18 Days/Periods Absent: If absences reach 18 days/periods, the case may be referred to the Yavapai County Juvenile Probation Office for further action.
