Weather-Related Closures
Weather-Related Closures and Delays
Plans for Weather Disruptions
We have two plans in place to address weather-related disruptions:
Plan A: 2-Hour Delay
- School begins two hours later than usual, allowing additional time for improved road conditions, daylight, and preparation by transportation and facilities teams.
- Buses run two hours later than their regular schedule.
- Dismissal times remain unchanged.
- Additional details about 2-hour delays are provided below.
Plan B: Full School Day Closure
- If conditions are deemed unsafe for travel or school operations, all classes, school activities, and events will be canceled for the day.
- Communication regarding rescheduled events or exceptions will be provided by school administration.
Notification Process
Families will be notified of delays or closures as early as possible, ideally before 8:00 PM the night prior to the affected school day. Updates will be shared through district-wide calls, text messages, emails, and posts on the district website and social media channels.
To receive timely updates, please ensure your contact information is up to date in the school’s communication system.

Purpose of a 2-Hour Delay or Snow Day
The primary consideration when deciding between a delay or closure is the safety of students and staff. Key factors include:
- Road condition reports from transportation staff, neighboring districts, and local authorities, with special attention to higher elevation and hazardous roads.
- Snow and ice accumulation on roadways.
- Weather forecasts, including temperature and precipitation data.
- The ability of buses to safely operate.
- Facility readiness, including heat, electricity, parking lot, and sidewalk conditions.
Delays also allow time to:
- Enable plow trucks and municipal crews to clear roads and sidewalks.
- Allow facilities teams to clear campus sidewalks and parking lots.
- Warm up buses and address cold weather-related mechanical issues.
- Provide more daylight for improved safety at bus stops and while walking.
- Allow sunlight to begin melting ice.
Helpful Tips for Families
DO:
- Check the district website at www.humboldtunified.com and follow the Humboldt Unified Facebook page for updates.
- Listen to local radio stations for announcements.
- Dress children appropriately for cold and wet weather.
- Remind children to be cautious when walking or driving on slippery roads.
DO NOT:
- Drop off children early on shortened schedules, as supervision may not be available.
- Allow students to drive vehicles that are not properly equipped for winter road conditions.
Use Your Own Judgment
Weather conditions can vary significantly across our district, with some areas experiencing little to no snow while others have substantial accumulation. Families are encouraged to assess road conditions in their area and decide whether travel is safe. If conditions feel unsafe, families may choose to stay home.
We appreciate your patience during inclement weather. Buses may run behind schedule due to road conditions, and schools may experience increased call volumes or staffing shortages. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation as we prioritize the safety of our school community.
