Curriculum

At Humboldt Unified School District (HUSD), our Educational Services Department is committed to delivering high-quality instruction aligned with the Arizona State Standards for every content area, grade level, and course. We provide ongoing professional development to ensure that our educators implement best practices that foster critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication skills.

Our curriculum is designed to equip students with the academic knowledge and skills needed to thrive in college, career, and life, reflecting real-world applications and 21st-century workplace demands.

Arizona’s College and Career Ready Standards

We are committed to providing students with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in college, career, and life. Our curriculum is built upon Arizona’s College and Career Ready Standards for English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies across grades K-12.

These standards not only define what students learn but also how they learn by focusing on:

  • Critical thinking
  • Problem-solving
  • Effective communication skills

The curriculum emphasizes real-world applications and 21st-century skills, preparing students for today’s workforce and higher education opportunities. Unlike previous standards that focused solely on content-specific subjects, these standards integrate essential skills that cross subject areas and reflect the demands of the modern workplace.

How Were These Standards Developed?

Arizona’s College and Career Ready Standards are part of a nationwide effort to raise academic expectations and prepare students for the future. These standards were developed through a collaborative process involving:

  • Teachers, subject matter experts, parents, and administrators—including some of Arizona’s top educational leaders.
  • Benchmarking against international education programs to ensure our students can compete globally.

Currently, 46 states and the District of Columbia are working to implement these standards and develop consistent assessments.

Where Do Textbooks Fit into the Curriculum?

While textbooks are an essential resource, curriculum is more than just textbooks. Derived from the Latin word meaning “the run of the course,” curriculum represents the entire learning journey.

At HUSD, the curriculum is anchored in the Arizona State Board of Education-adopted Arizona College and Career Readiness Standards, enhanced by evidence-based practices, including research from Dr. Robert Marzano on critical content and assessments.

We follow a collaborative, comprehensive process when adopting textbooks and learning resources. Our curriculum committees:

  • Recommend materials that enrich the curriculum and meet the diverse needs of our students.
  • Ensure resources encourage critical thinking, literary appreciation, and understanding of societal values.
  • Select only the highest-quality resources after thorough evaluation.

All proposed textbooks are available for public review at the HUSD District Office for at least 60 days before board approval.

How You Can Play a Role

Parents and families are essential partners in student success. With common, rigorous standards and assessments, families can better understand how students are performing—regardless of where they move within Arizona or beyond.

You can support your child’s learning by:

  • Setting high expectations at home.
  • Staying engaged with your child’s progress through regular conversations with teachers.
  • Accessing resources available in the Families section of the Arizona Department of Education.

At HUSD, we are committed to helping students transition successfully through these standards, and we value your partnership in preparing them for a bright future.
