Welcome to Mountain View Elementary School

I would like to welcome you, along with my staff, to the Mountain View web site. All of us are excited to work with you and your family regarding the education, safety, and welfare of your child/children. We are the home of the Academic Polar Bears!

 Reading Counts

Mountain View students in second through fifth grade participate in an independent reading program called Scholastic Reading Counts™. This computer-based program motivates students to read, encourages reading for understanding, and monitors reading comprehension. Thousands of schools throughout the nation have used this program to motivate students to read more at school and at home, and to improve their reading comprehension.

The Reading Counts program begins with a computer-based test designed to estimate each child’s reading level. The students take this test—which is called the Scholastic Reading Inventory™—three times during the year. The scores (which are measured in Lexiles™) are used to monitor student progress, and to help guide students to books that are at an appropriate difficulty level.

During their weekly visits to our library, students are directed to books at their measured Lexile™ for which we own Reading Counts quizzes. Currently, Mountain View owns quizzes for around 45,000 of today’s most popular children’s books.

Click the link below to view complete lists of the books for which we own Reading Counts quizzes. Consider using these lists to check for “quiz-able” books in your home library, or to develop a list of books your child is interested in prior to your next visit to the public library.  If you’re already at the library, check with the children’s library staff about accessing these lists from there.
