Exceptional Education for Exceptional Children
Exceptional children enrolled in HUSD receive a continuum of services, preschool-12, that meet federal guidelines for the Least Restrictive Environment. Certified teachers, school psychologists, speech/language therapists and physical occupational therapists serve all exceptional students. Additionally, our staff works with families and other agencies to create environments that help exceptional children discover their unique abilities and succeed in their adult lives.
Special Needs
All special needs students are transported to their schools. On the bus or in the classroom, students are assisted as needed by highly-trained attendants and assistants. Extended school year services are provided in the summertime. A variety of specialize technologies help students gain independence through accessibility. On-the-job training and job coaching is available to high school students.
Staff
School staff, as well as personnel from the North Central Regional cooperative (Affiliated with the Arizona School for the Deaf and Blind) serve sensory impaired students.
Speech and language pathologists serve students with communicative disorder and speaking/listening challenges.
Physical or occupational therapy is provided as needed for success and progress in special services. Adaptive physical education is also available.
Transition services for disabled students, ages 14 through 21, include a vocational assessment and transition program to help prepare for success in life beyond school.
