Pennies for Leukemia

Student Council is starting a Penny Drive on Monday, January 11th to help students with Leukemia. All pennies donated will go to other students throughout the United States who are struggling with Leukemia. Kindergarten and grades 1 & 2 can put their pennies in a jar at the main office counter. Grades 3, 4, & 5 will have collection containers in the classroom. The drive will end on January 29th.

Lion’s Recycling
We are continuing to earn money from our Lion’s bins at the front of the school. Please continue to donate your newspapers and magazines. We are earning approximately $50 each month from the Lion’s Club. Thank you for your support.

Grants
Mrs. Sundermann has won a $500 grant for the second grade. The second grade will use this money for a field trip to the Highlands Center. The field trip will be related to the work our second grade students do in our Habitat with our State Science Standards.

We have hired a new administrative secretary and her name is Carol Bowe. Please say hello when you stop by the school and welcome her to Coyote Springs. Mrs. Bowe comes to us highly qualified and is already a great addition to our office staff.

We are starting a program at Coyote Springs called the “Friends” program. We are able to provide this program through a grant. The main purpose of the program is to support the development of social and interpersonal skills for school children. This program is designed to improve the quality of their play interactions with their peers.  We have scheduled our first staff training for January 6th.

We have also been awarded an additional grant from AmeriCorp. This grant has allowed us to hire Hillary Goldstein, a certified teacher, who will be pursuing partnerships with other community organizations and helping us expand our volunteer program. Ms. Goldstein will also be working to develop more enhancement opportunities for students needing enrichment opportunities as well as directing our Bridges Lab for struggling students.

On January 5, 2010, the School Board accepted my request for retirement at the end of the 2009-2010 school year. I will let you know the selection process timelines for the new principal as soon as they become available. It has truly been an honor to work with such wonderful students and supportive parents/guardians.
